Southerndown Quiz and Curry Night  - A date for your diary next year!

This year, after some years in Pubs around the area, the venue for the Quiz changed to the Village Hall in Penllyn with in house catering and BYO alcohol.

Jo Thorne and I winkled the kids from their bedrooms and away from their mobile phones to do our duty and support the Club with new member Janice in tow.

What a surprise we had! As usual, the quiz was hugely entertaining and well organised by our quiz mistress Rachel Thomas.

But the food was a real surprise....a spectacular choice of several curries,      all absolutely delicious, for a bargain ticket price. It was quite the best food we have had at any Quiz night I remember ( I do like my grub, can you tell?). Despite being hampered by Janice and their parents, Nonnie and Ellie put in a very creditable performance in the quiz and we all had a lot of fun. I would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation, it was a really great night.

We will be looking forward to next year, and at the front of the queue for the food - hope to see you there!!

MEMBERS CHAMPIONSHIP MOMENTS -BRC National Championships 2013

Getting There
4:30 am - alarm..... Really??  Surely it's not that time yet.  It was.  We propped our eyes open with matchsticks, found the car, told the sat nav kid to take us to The BRC CHAMPIONSHIPS and off we went.
7:00 am - We've arrived!!  With a welcome cup of coffee it was time to give the ponies their breakfast.  It would appear that while everyone else slept Nibbles had begun on a mission to dig to Australia!

Preparation
Having just about managed to pin Nibbles to the ground long enough to plait him (we failed on the forelock) it was time to see what he made of his first championship show....

Competition Time
9:00 am - How exciting!  With concentration not being one of our strong points at the best of times it was clear that dressage would be a challenge with so many people to look at.  After a bit of sweet talking Nibbles agreed to go and see the arenas - but only if he could canter.  And in canter we stayed.  It was a lovely canter, it's just that the test said "enter in trot".  Still not to worry, we got through it and I didn't fall off.

11:30 am - Time for Beau to make his first appearance in the Novice Show Jumping.  Taking it all in his stride (unlike his new BFF Nibbles) he breezed around clear and inside the time!

1:30 pm - Style jumping, hmmm.  With the words of Steve Arnett still ringing in our ears from the practice session "angels just sit and be fabulous!" We gave it a go.  Beau was a little confused by having to canter AROUND the jumps to start with  -  "Dressage? Are you sure?" But he was soon into his stride and jumped another clear.

No sooner did we think all that pretending to look pretty and appear in control was over with, the news came through that Sophie's horse Solo had gone lame.  Oh no!  It was quickly decided that no one would notice if wee swapped an elegant dressage pro with a blonde section D so Beau was in at the deep end in the Team of Four.

"It's ok we'll wing it"
Having no idea of the test Beau and I fell into place as number 3 and played follow my leader.  Despite one or two "volcanic" moments I don't think anyone noticed the last minute swap and everyone was smiling.

After all that it was time for a quick rest before our final round (or so I thought) at 5:10 pm.

5:10 pm - well well well we only jumped another clear and managed to get into the jump off!! OMG!!

As we were kicked out of the stables at 6:00 pm (not that I thought we'd still be here) Beau and I decided to watch the team jump off while Nibs (having nearly reached Australia) waited not so patiently on the lorry.
We had decided not to try the tight turn back to the vertical planks, as Beau pointed out, most of the team horses were knocking it down.
18:30 - with the team places decided it was our turn in the individual jump off.  But not before they changed the course!!  What?!
We quickly re learnt the correct route and as  we were second to go Beau decided the best course of action was just to gallop (who am I to argue?). Unfortunately my suggestion to slow down just a little before the treble combination met with a touch of hostility and we just rubbed the first element to finish on a respectable 4 faults.

20:00. At last we go back to the lorry, all done, except for the long drive home.

It was an exceptionally long day but well worth it.  At the time of writing Nibbles is only just starting to talk to us again (his place in
"the priory" is reserved) and Beau is full of beans and looking forward the the ODE in a couple of weeks.
Well done to everyone who competed and to all the helpers who made the trip.  See you there next year!!

AREA 15. SUMMER SHOW JUMPING QUALIFIER.

Allensmore, Hereford

June 16th 2013  Click here for full Results

Whoopee!! What a brilliant result for our Senior Style Jumping team at last weekends Area Qualifier. Our team consisting of, Azina Hall, Libby Morgan, Georgia Keymes and Gareth Perkins, took first place as a team, with Azina Hall being placed overall 1st Georgia Kemeys overall 3rd & Libby Morgan being placed 5thoverall. Style jumping for those you aren’t sure is; to be judged not on the horse’s ability or style but on the rider’s ability to demonstrate a good jumping technique. A light balanced position prior to the jump, including changes of pace, maintaining an independent and balanced position during the course and the track, showing the ability to ride suitable turns, approaches and immediately concludes the round. Really well done everyone, that’s what you did and we need to do it all again at the Championships in September, no pressure!

We entered into just about all the classes, with varying success. Junior Novice and Style Jumping; our junior team was Beth Granville, Imogen Rees, Molly Thomas and Alicia Thomas. Hanna Bertorelli rode in the Junior Intermediate Class, Lorry Davies and Georgia Keymes Senior Intermediate. Georgia came into the style team, with Jenny Thomas going to represent the club as an individual, but unfortunately wasn’t feeling too bright on the day and saved her energy for the Novice Team event, where the team, Jenny Thomas, Azina Hall, Libby Morgan, and Gareth Perkins where placed 4th . Azina went on to jump a 3rd round to clinch Individual first place, and another place at the Champs.

The day may have had an early start for many of our members, but it’ll be a weekend of nerves, excitement and early starts at Lincoln. Bring it on!!

Well Done to all Southerndown Members who represented the club.

Many Thanks!! also all the suporters who came along to cheer them on.
